Abstract/Contents:"Much research has evaluated foramsulfuron safety and weed control in established bermudagrass turf but information is lacking on seedling response to foramsulfuron. Three field experiments were conducted in Blacksburg, VA to assess 'Riviera' seeded bermudagrass and smooth crabgrass response to foramsulfuron during seedling bermudagrass establishment. Both foramsulfuron rate and application timing had significant effects on seeded bermudagrass injury and cover. Seeded bermudagrass injury increased with foramsulfuron rate. Foramsulfuron applied at 0 and 1 weeks before seeding (WBS) did not significantly injure seeded bermudagrass. At 4 weeks after seeding (WAS), 85 g ha-1 foramsulfuron injured seeded bermudagrass. Foramsulfuron applied as seeded bermudagrass was emerging or to very young bermudagrass seedlings was most injurious. Higher foramsulfuron rates resulted in highest injury, which in turn resulted in reduced time to complete turfgrass cover. In contrast, applications of foramsulfuron 4 WAS, when seedling bermudagrass was at 2-5 leaf growth stage resulted in no significant turf injury or reduction in turfgrass cover compared to the nontreated. Foramsulfuron suppressed crabgrass. Although bermudagrass cover 8 weeks after seeding was not influenced by any foramsulfuron treatment, foramsulfuron should not be applied soon after seeding bermudagrass for optimal seeded bermudagrass tolerance."
