Abstract/Contents:"The effects of mono-stands (swards) of Kentucky bluegrass (i.e., a known unsuitable host) and insecticide treatments to peripheral areas surrounding golf course putting greens on black cutworm (BCW) populations were investigated. Establishment of Kentucky bluegrass mono-stands in the peripheral areas surrounding golf course putting greens greatly reduced the number of BCW larvae compared to putting greens surrounded by mainly perennial ryegrass (i.e., a suitable host). Insecticide applications to peripheral areas dramatically decreased BCW populations. The combination of these two management strategies may significantly reduce the likelihood of BCW larvae emigrating onto putting greens from the surrounding peripheral areas. Consequently, these BCW management approaches will likely reduce the overall pesticide input directly applied to putting greens, thus minimizing potential exposure to human and animals."
