Abstract/Contents: | "Ophiobolus patch of turfgrass (incitant Gaeumannomyces graminis var. avenae (E.M. Turner) Dennis) was observed for the first time in Maryland on 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass turf at Beltsville in 1979. Recently the pathogen has been isolated from bentgrass exhibiting typical disease symptoms from golf courses less than 5 years old in Easton, Oakland, and Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Affected turf exhibited light yellow, bronze, red-brown or bleached tan patches 15 cm to 60 cm in diameter. Typical dark brown runner hyphae and simple hyphopodia occurred on roots, crowns, and basal sheath tissue. Ascospore lengths from Beltsville, Oakland, and Upper Marlboro isolates were 96.4 um, 95.8 um, and 108.9 um, respectively. Soil pH at the four sites ranged from 6.2 to 7.4, and soil texture was a sandy or a silty loam. This constitutes the second report of the disease in the eastern U.S. and the first report of its occurrence in the mid-Atlantic states." |
