Abstract/Contents:"The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of fungicides for the control of dollar spot on a mixed creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass experimental green at UC Riverside. The green was a 80/20 mix of creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass, established in 2007 from sod. Turf was mowed 3 days a week at a height of 0.25-in. and irrigated daily according to ET needs. Treatment plots were 4 ft x 6 ft, and each plot was inoculated on 29 Sep with approximately 0.2 to 0.3 oz of oat seed infested with S. homoeocarpa spread out evenly onto each plot. Inoculum was produced by growing S. homoeocarpa on autoclaved oat seed for 4 weeks at 28°C prior to use using a mix of five isolates obtained from five different California locations. Disease symptoms developed on the plots after 2 Oct. Curative fungicide treatments were applied starting 09 Oct to four replicated plots per treatment with a CO2-powered backpack sprayer, using TeeJet 8002 flat fan nozzles to deliver the equivalent of 2 gal dilute fungicide spray per 1,000 sq ft at 35 psi at 14-day intervals, with the last application being made on 6 Nov. Disease severity was rated by evaluation of percent area diseased on a 0 to 100 scale. Disease severity data was analyzed by ANOVA and mean comparisons were performed for rating dates where P <= 0.05 using Fisher's Protected Least Significant Difference test (α = 0.05). The initial disease symptoms were fairly uniform throughout the plots prior to fungicide application. An irrigation controller failure led to excessive irrigation of the test area approximately 31 Oct, leading to an increase in disease during the first week of Nov. Irrigation was discontinued afterwards, leading to the disappearance of disease by 20 Nov. Overall, all treatments provided significant control compared to the water only check; differences between treatments were most apparent prior to late Oct. The experimental fungicides EXP-1 and EXP-2 provided the most consistent control throughout the trial. EXP-3and 26/36 provided good control on 23 and 30 Oct but less so on the 6 Nov rating date. Spectro appeared to give good initial control that degraded over the course of the trial. Experimental fungicides MOI-106 and -107 provided good initial control but only moderate control by the 6 Nov rating date."
