Abstract/Contents:"The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of fungicides for the control of algae on a mixed creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass experimental green at UC Riverside. The green was a 50/50 mix of creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass, established in Jan 07 from sod. Excess organic matter and poor water infiltration resulted in a heavy algae infestation in cool (55 to 70°F) weather during establishment. Turf was mowed 3 days a week at a height of 0.25-in. and irrigated thrice-weekly according to ET needs. Treatment plots were 6 ft x 4 ft. Fungicide treatments were applied starting 6 Apr to four replicated plots per treatment with a CO2-powered backpack sprayer, using TeeJet 8002 flat fan nozzles to deliver the equivalent of 2 gal dilute fungicide spray per 1000 sq ft at 35 psi at a 7- or 14-day interval, with the last application being made on 27 Apr. Percent turfgrass cover in the plots was rated on a 0 to 100 scale. Values were analyzed by ANOVA and mean comparisons were performed using Fisher's Protected Least Significant Difference test (α = 0.05). Algae infestation was uniform in test plots at the initiation of the experiment. No differences were observed between treatments until 27 Apr. Daconil applications at all rates, with the exception of the 2 fl oz WeatherStik application, resulted in about equivalent recovery from algae infestation. Fore and Zerotol when used at the various application intervals and rates gave similar results. On only one evaluation date (27 Apr, 0.5 fl oz rate) did Trinity applications provide statistically significant recovery, as compared to the water only treatment."
