Abstract/Contents:Discusses the control of weeds, defining the plant group to which most weeds belong as "dicotyledons, that is, they have two seed-leaves which appear first when the seedling germinates." Classifies weed killers as either selective or non-selective, and distinguishes selective weedkillers that kill broad-leaved weeds from selective weed killers that kill grasses. Emphasizes the potential importance of "husbandry techniques" to weed control, focusing on regular mowing and de-thatching. Describes an "acid theory" that holds that "when the acidity of soils becomes less...most grasses begin to slow down or lose vigour [vigor] while weeds grow more vigorously than ever." Mentions advances made in the development of herbicides in the late-middle 20th century. Details several specific hormone weed killers, describing the potential efficacy of each. Lists precautions to take when using weed killers, highlighting label instructions, turf and skin irritation, overdosing, overlapping applications, and spray drift, among others.
