Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the construction, establishment, and management of bowling greens, focusing on building retaining walls for the playing surface and the surrounding banks. States that "in many instances these have been built in timber but, over a period of years, decay sets in...so it is [in 1977] becoming more general to have retaining walls built in concrete and capped with timber." Also highlights green leveling; bank building; and the establishment of vegetative cover, fine turf, and Cotula. Briefly suggests means of early growth control and early manuring. Explains potential ways to renovate greens, stating that "in the autumn of every year a green should be renovated...for the following season of play." Mentions preparation for and early care after opening the green for the season, as well as manuring and treatment of soil compaction in subsequent years. |
