Abstract/Contents:Presents notes on the presence of dry patch in turf, focusing on the writing of Roy Bond of the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrical Research Organization Soils Division in South Australia. Highlights the effects of watering on dry patch and wilting. States that "water movement is decreased in a water repellent soil only while water is being absorbed by the dry soil. Once the soil has become wet then water repellence no longer retards flow of liquid." Emphasizes the potential importance of soil type for successfully determining water repellence. Mentions a study conducted at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club in Adelaide, South Australia, in order to obtain "a control measure which would not only help the turf to recover more quickly but would also prevent occurrence of dry patch." Details materials and procedures used, stating that the researchers used "two different sandy loams, one containing 12% and the other 16% clay, and a sand with no clay. These three soils were rubbed into core holes 12mm [millimeters in] diam. [diameter] and 75mm deep spaced at 50mm centres [centers]." Reports that "after any dew...has dried, the soil is spread over the turf to a depth of about 10mm and a flat plate vibrator which is self-propelled is moved over the soil. On one pass the majority of the holes are filled and some holes which were blocked...are opened." Concludes by implying that the technique is effective, stating that "this technique has been used at Tea Tree Gully on almost all greens and I understand that another treatment will be given in the coming year."
