Abstract/Contents:Discusses soil testing, focusing on "a tendency for greenkeepers and groundsmen [in New Zealand] to place an emphasis upon the value of soil testing that is not shared by similar groups overseas or by many eminent research workers in the fields of turf management." Mentions a visit made to New Zealand by James B Beard in 1976, reporting that "in his opinion, while soil tests may assist in greenkeeping, the important point was an intelligent assessment of turf reaction to applied dressings of fertiliser [fertilizer] ingredients...he questioned the value of annual soil tests and felt that they could quite well be taken at longer intervals." Concludes that frequent soil testing may not be necessary if they repetitively yield nearly identical results.
