Abstract/Contents:Discusses the presence of trees and shrubs in sports areas, stating that "besides the primary aim of beautifying an area, [superintendents] also plant for shelter and possibly shade." Implies that doing so can cause problems of wear, leaf cover, drainage, and poor light for turfgrass. Suggests several factors to be considered when planting, including tree height, spread, type, effect on soil drainage and light access for turf. States that "trees will...have more impact on the site than shrubs but both have their particular uses." Presents an extensive table that illustrates ultimate height, spread, foliage color, growth rate, features, and possible disadvantages of many types of trees and shrubs.
