Abstract/Contents:Discusses the use of fungicides on turfgrass in New Zealand, stating that "diseases of turf are generally the result of attack by pathogenic (disease-causing) fungi. Bacteria and viruses commonly cause diseases of many plants but are not known to cause problems with New Zealand turf-plant species." Distinguishes between protectant and systemic fungicides, explaining that protectants "act by covering the surface of leaves with a chemical layer toxic to fungi, and thus prevent disease from occurring," while systemics are "slowly absorbed from the soil by the plant roots, thus giving a long-term protection against disease attack." Describes four types of fungicides: Benzimidazole systemic, Calirus, broad-spectrum protectant, and narrow-spectrum protectant. Briefly mentions the potential ability of pathogenic fungi to develop resistance to Benzimidazole systemic fungicides. Suggests several measures that "can be taken to avoid disease resistance from developing," including applying the fungicide once heavily rather than many times lightly, avoiding routine applications, and using alternate applications of a protectant and a systemic fungicide.
