Abstract/Contents:Discusses the relationship of sand and sports turf in New Zealand during the late 1970s. Provides a general introduction to the use of sand, detailing its use on several types of sports fields. Notes that "local sources of wind-deposited sand have been used in green construction in New Zealand, but the greens have become waterlogged, are very soft, and have very poor root penetration." Profiles sand by size and composition at Palmerston North, New Zealand. Describes "preliminary investigations of sand growing media for Cotula," focusing on plant growth, rooth growth, and root dry weights. Presents tables illustrating percentage moisture retained and percentage of pore space occupied by water in several sizes of sand above a perched layer. Reports that "although the use of different aggregate sizes and layers within the profile did not affect the final top growth of Cotula, root growth was affected." Briefly discusses the effects of particle size ranges and layered profiles on Penncross bentgrass, emphasizing top growth, root growth, root dry weights, and the "physical characteristics of the unamended media." Presents a table regarding percolation rates in layered profiles of several thicknesses and aggregate sizes. Describes the "effect of particle size distribution on Penncross bentgrass and the physical properties of the mixture." Includes a table on porosity, percolation, and capillary uptake in several aggregate size mixtures. Concludes that "acceptable turf was produced on a wide range of aggregate sizes. Root penetration was apparently not related to any of the physical properties determined in this experiment but the mixtures were rather coarse." States that this article is to be continued in a later issue.
