| Abstract/Contents: | Presents two studies: "Changes in percolation rates and water holding capacities in a developing turf grown on sand" and "Moisture usage by turfgrass and a test of Purr-Wick System." Details methods and materials used for the studies, stating that "percolation rates were determined on uncompacted and compacted profiles," and that "small Purr-Wick cells were constructed by removing the tops of plastic 'jerry cans' at the shoulder to give an open topped container containing .21 cu.m [cubic meters] in volume and having a surface of 768cm [centimeters]." Reports that "moisture retention and the percentage pore space filled with water also changed with the developing turf and compaction," and that "the infiltration rate of the surface layer was very slow when moisture was not applied for two or three days." Concludes that "using the perched water principle in sand culture, but amending only the top layer, yields acceptable moisture retention," and that "although the moisture retention in most mixtures...would be great enough so that daily watering was not required it would be better to employ daily or two-daily [twice-daily] watering." |
