Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted in 1973 at Grasslands Division Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Palmerston North, New Zealand, to compare the quality of penncross bentgrass in soils where "variations in pH [potential hydrogen] between 4.0 and 5.5 were induced by various nitrogenous fertilizers." Details the method and materials of the experiment, identifying the fertilizers used as ammonium sulphate, urea, and nitrolime. Reports that "in comparison with the weedy and mossy turf where urea and nitrolime were used, the effect of ammonium sulphate was to keep the treatments almost weed-free." Explains the effects of the nitrogenous fertilizers' rates on penncross, stating that heavy rates of all three significantly improved weed control. Concludes that "if weed control is to be secured by fertilizer application and pH adjustment then it seems that the pH should be stabilised [stabilized] at just over 5."
