Abstract/Contents:Describes golf courses and superintendents in the United States during the late 1970s, comparing the country's golf industry to that of New Zealand. States that "in 1973...there were 11,956 golf courses in the U.S. [United States] and that 190 alone were opened in 1976. This compares with approximately 400 [total courses] in New Zealand." Details turfgrass used in different areas of the U.S., highlighting Poa tratensis, red fescue (Festuca rubra), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris). Summarizes aerification and water management practices used in the U.S. at that time. Emphasizes that "[in 1979] the U.S. superintendent not only needs to manage fine turf but is also expected to have a professional attitude to planning and budgeting." Mentions the effects of the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act. Describes several insect pests that were being researched during the late 1970s in the U.S.
