Abstract/Contents:Discusses a seminar conducted for racecourse managers in October, 1979 by the New Zealand Turf Culture Institute. States that "the objectives were to bring before course members the basic factors involved in producing and maintaining a dense turf cover capable of withstanding the damaging effects of horses' hooves." Mentions three potential causes of excess water, highlighting places where soil compaction prevents water from soaking in; places where the water table is high and the soil is wet from below; and places where water runs onto the course from surrounding areas. Suggests that "overcoming the two latter problems requires efficient drainage usually with a combination of moles and pipes." Emphasizes what might be considered "desirable grasses" for racecourses, stating that "Dr. [Doctor] P. Evans of the Turf Research Section at Grasslands Division considered ryegrasses to be the preferred species." Briefly considers other factors of turf maintenance, including nitrogen fertilization; mowing height and frequency; rolling; returfing; and watering.
