Abstract/Contents:"A randomized block design consisting of four treatments and four replications per treatment was established on a putting green nursery. Plots were 4 X 4 ft. The treatments were applied as a top-dressing every two weeks starting 14 June 1988 and ending on 9 October 1988 for a total of 9 applications. The treatments consisted of NPK, 20-0-10 (2.5 lb/1,000 sq ft, 19.3% N) which served as a control, chitin [from crab shells, practical grade, Sigma Chemical Company, St. Louis, MO (15.2 lb/1,000 sq ft, 6.5% N)], chitin (7.6 lb/1,000 sq ft) and Milorganite [Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, Milwaukee, WI (5 lb/1,000 sq ft, 6.7% N)]. The turf consisted mostly of annual bluegrass sparsely colonized by bentgrasses. The soil was a USDA loamy sand, 84% sand, 13% silt, 3% clay with 4% organic matter. The nursery was maintained at putting green height and received aerification and top-dressing with sand twice. Soil samples for nematode assays were collected within a 9 sq ft area centered within each 16 sq ft plot. Seven 1 X 4 inch soil cores were taken and bulked for each plot beginning 8 June 1988 and then with 28 June, immediately prior to each of the biweekly treatment applications. Nematodes were extracted from 25 cc soil aliquots by wet sieving and centrifugation-sugar flotation. The 1988 season was unusually hot and dry. Poa annua at this location showed evidence of heat stress on 23 August 1988, two weeks following the highest peak of nematode activity. Analysis of variance indicated that there were no significant differences between treatment means at any of the sampling dates."
