Abstract/Contents: | Discusses winter golfing in the United Kingdom and the adverse effects the season can have on turf. States that gameplay on turf that is experiencing white "hoar" frost or permafrost can can cause permanent damage. Mentions thawing, implying that it might make turf more vulnerable to damage. States that snow cover does very little damage to grass plants. Describes possible management options for "[balancing] the requirement for play with the long-term health and condition of the course and its playing surfaces." Concludes that the prevention of damage incurred throughout the winter outweighs the inconvenience of the protective measures utilized by golf courses. |
