Abstract/Contents:Describes a test for soil texture and strength developed by the Soil Science Unit of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, New Zealand. States that the Adams, Stewart, Soil Binding Test (A.S.S.B.) "consists of carefully wetting, moulding [molding] and drying spheres of soil approximately ¾ in. [inch] in diameter which are then compressed until they shatter. The force required to shatter the soil sphere is recorded in pounds." Details materials needed for the test, emphasizing the necessity of "a Proctor needle equipped with a range of calibrated springs to record the breaking value." Identifies as controls of the A.S.S.B.: "1. Standardization of sample size; 2. Wetting to standard moisture state; 3. Breakdown of aggregation; 4. Moulding [molding]; and 5. Drying." Notes that "granulation of clay soils resulting from the natural processes of cracking or worm casting can be very difficult to disperse by rolling." Suggests that organic matter content, clay type and the degree to which the individual clay particles are fully dispersed can influence soil strength in the laboratory.
