Abstract/Contents: | The toxic perennial weed, serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma) has recently been found in foreign-grown tall fescue, ryegrass and bermudagrass seed sold in the United States. The weed, found in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina, has unusual drought and herbicide resistance. Serrated tussock poses a potential threat to turf managers as it produces an aggressive, clumpy spread under dry conditions, and has been documented to be fatal to sheep and cause stall-out in cattle. Toxicity to wildlife is uncertain and no selective control is known. Turf managers should be careful to buy only certified seed, sample testing their seed, or have it tested for contaminants by a state lab or independent testing lab. |
