| Abstract/Contents: | To aid the greenkeeper in choosing varieties of turfgrasses that are of the highest quality, knowledge of the individual varieties' susceptibility to a host of fungal diseases is vital. By selecting grasses inherently resistant to a certain disease, it is possible to establish a turf surface that ultimately needs less fungicides. To this end, varieties of Festuca rubra, Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis, Festuca ovina, and Agrostis L. are evaluated on the basis of their susceptibility to four kinds of diseases: speck diseases (Blattflecken), red thread (Rotspitzigkeit), rotting diseases (Fäulnis) and rusts (Rost). Rating the qualitiy of the varieties on a scale of 9-1 (9 being the purest, 1 the least so) and their susceptibility on a scale of 1-6 (1 the most resistant 6 the most susceptible), tables are arranged in such a manner that the purst, strongest grasses are to be found in the uper left hand corner, whileas those of the poorest quality and highest susceptibility are to be found in the bottom right corner. Each kind of grass discussed proves to have some varieties that are more highly resistant than others, the use of which can only benefit the overall health of the golf course turf grasses. |
