Abstract/Contents:"This study was conducted in summer 2008 to evaluate early (preventative) and late (curative) applications of Acelepryn (chlorantraniliprole) for control of white grubs in bermudagrass turf. Treatments were applied to a bermudagrass fairway located at a demonstration golf course at the Oklahoma State University Oklahoma City campus. Plots were 6 ft by 8 ft (48 ft2) and mowed at 0.5 inch and irrigated as needed. Treatments consisted of two rates of Aceleprin 1.67 SC applied early (24 Apr) and late (18 Jul) that were compared to an early and late application of Merit 0.75G as standard white grub treatments. All treatments were compared against a non-treated control group and replicated four times in a RCB design. Granular treatments were applied by hand evenly across plots and liquid treatments were applied with a CO2 pressurized (18 psi) wheelbarrow sprayer equipped with four TX8008 flat fan nozzles and calibrated to deliver 2.0 gal/1000 ft2. All plots were irrigated with approximately 0.25 inch of water following insecticide application. Grub populations were determined on 9 Oct, 2008 by sampling 9 ft2 lengthwise at the center of each plot using a mechanical sod cutter measuring 1.5 ft wide and set at a depth of 2.0 inches. The turf and soil from each plot were examined to determine the number of white grubs. All data were log(x+1) transformed and analyzed using ANOVA (SAS 9.1, PROC GLM). White grub densities were quite variable among plots ranging from 1 to 23 grubs per yd2 in the non-treated plots. These data were not normally distributed even after transformation and could not be analyzed with parametric statistics. Nevertheless, a clear numerical trend was evident based on the mean number of white grubs per yd2. The non-treated control plots had the highest white grub densities on average; although these densities were also below treatment thresholds. All treatments led to reductions in white grub densities with late applications of Acelepryn performing better than early applications. Early applications of Merit provided numerically equivalent control to the late application of Merit and the early applications of Acelepryn. Late applications of Acelepryn provided numerically superior control compared to the early applications of Acelepryn and the early and late application of Merit Phytotoxicity was not observed during the growing season for all treatments."
