Abstract/Contents:"This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a range of products labeled for use against ECF in New York State. The experiment was conducted in a low maintenance turf area of the Niagara County Golf Course, Lockport, NY. Turf composition was a mix of perennial ryegrass and other unidentified grasses (approximately 80%), as well as broadleaf perennial weeds (approximately 20%). Treatment plots were 3 ft Œ 3 ft and arranged in a RCB design with 12 repetitions of 13 treatments. Applications were made 10 Oct 2008, after peak emergence of adult ECF to target eggs and neonates. Liquid formulations were applied with a pressurized CO2 sprayer while granular formulations were evenly applied using a shaker jar. Conditions at time of application were the following: skies partly sunny; wind slightly breezy; air temp 60°F; soil temp at 2.0-inch depth 60°F. Over the course of evaluation grass ht was maintained at 2.5 inches, plots were not irrigated, and only a trace amt of rainfall was detected. ECF larval populations were evaluated on 20 Oct 2008 by removing five soil cores (diameter 2 inches) from each plot, and heat extracting larvae in a battery of modified Tullgren funnels over 24 h. Data were transformed by sqrt(x+0.5) before ANOVA, followed by LSMeans separation using Student's t. Mean population density in the untreated check was 141.5 ECF larvae/ft2. All insecticidal treatments suppressed ECF larvae >50% with respect to the untreated check. There was no discernible rate response for Allectus G, and both the high and low rates were surpassed by all other treatments. There was a positive rate response for Duocide where 83.2% control at the low rate improved to 98.4% at the high rate. Sevin SL gave greater control than the low rate of Duocide, but not the high rate. Control only varied by 4.4% between the two rates of Merit. The high rate of Merit was not significantly different than Duocide high rate and Sevin SL."
