| Abstract/Contents: | "Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) is considered undesirable in coastal bermudagrass hay meadows in Texas. Hay producers are seeking herbicides that will eliminate encroaching bahiagrass without injury to the bermudagrass. Dalapon at 4.4 lb/A and glyphosate at 0.37, 0.56, 0.75, 0.94 and 1.12 lb/A were applied to recently mower and mature bahiagrass in bermudagrass meadow October 9, 1986. October 22, the initial burndown was evaluated and none of the treatments gave acceptable bahiagrass control (greater than 66%), but injured the bermudagrass. Evaluation September 24, 1987 revealed that dalapon resulted in 77% control of bahiagrass. Glyphosate rates and percent control are as follows: 0.37 lb/A - 74%, 0.56 - 72%, 0.75 - 70%, 0.94 - 84%, and 1.12 - 80%. Injury to bermudagrass was not serious except at the 0.56 and 1.12 lb/A rates which gave 24 and 40% growth reduction, respectively. Escort (metsulfuron) was applied in another location April 23, 1987. Rates of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 oz/A resulted in 65, 70, and 85% control respectively. No injury was noted when rated on July 2, 1987. Escort has promise as a successful treatment for bahiagrass in bermudagrass meadows, but presently is not labeled." |
