Abstract/Contents:"Prodiamine and pendimethalin are dinitroaniline herbicides. This family of herbicides has caused inhibition of cell division in root meristems and prevention of of root development from stolon nodes. A technique was developed to measure the amount of root development from sod. In this procedure, sod was cut 1-cm thick and 20-cm diameter sod strips were obtained using a plug cutter. Herbicides were applied using 468L/ha spray volume over the top of the sod strips immediately before placing them on 25-cm diameter greenhouse plots. The standard rates for adequate crabgrass control in turfgrasses are 0.56 kg ai/ha for prodiamine and 3.36 kg ai/ha for pendimethalin. The rates used in these studies were 0.28, 0.56, 1.12, and 2.24 kg/ha for prodiamine and 0.84, 1.68, 1.68 (repeated at 3 weeks), 3.36, and 6.72 kg/ha for pendimethalin. Two frames with hardware cloth were used on each pot under the sod strip. Sod was allowed 6 weeks for root growth through the hardware cloth into the pot of soil. One frame was clamped to the pot and the second was gradually pulled vertically from the pot using a winch. The force required to separate the sod strip from the pot of soil has been shown to correlate directly with the amount of roots (by weight) in the soil pot. The studies were replicated 4 times and repeated. The root growth of tall fescue was affected less with prodiamine and pendimethalin than the other four grasses. Rooting of tall fescue was gradually reduced as rates of proniamine were increased. At the high rate rooting was significantly reduced. Pendimethalin did not cause a reduction in root development at 2 times the normal rate for crabgrass control. Benefin at 3.36 kg/ha used as a standard had only a slight effect on rooting of tall fescue. The rooting of perennial ryegrass, bentgrass and bluegrass was similar for both herbicides. Prodiamine reduced the rooting of ryegrass (58%), bentgrass (61%) and bluegrass (47%) at the normal rate. The 4x normal rate caused further inhibition of rooting in bluegrass and bentgrass but did not in perennial ryegrass. Pendimethalin at the normal rate significantly reduced the root development of bentgrass and bluegrass but ryegrass rooting was not significantly different from the control. Two applications of 1/2 the standard rate of pendimethalin reduced rooting of bentgrass and bluegrass more than one treatment at the normal rate. The ryegrass rooting was also reduced but was not significantly different from the normal rate. Benefin reduced the rooting of ryegrass (44%), bentgrass (43%) and bluegrass (35%). Bermudagrass rooting was affected the most by proniamine and pendimethalin of the five grasses used. The two herbicides were about equally inhibitory and compared well with benefin. The lowest rates of each herbicide reduced the root development of bermudagrass by 50 to 65% as compared to the control. Tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, bluegrass, bentgrass and bermudagrass are placed in order of most tolerant to least tolerant in terms of root growth and development from sod to the dinitroaniline herbicides."
