Abstract/Contents:Study to determine if plant tolerance to landfill cover soil was related to root system depth. In the spring of 1976, 10 replicates of 4 woody species (Picea abies, Pinus thunbergii, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Gleditsia triacanthos) were planted on 2m centers in a randomized complet block design in sandy loam soil spread over a 9 m deep former refuse landfill. Planting was repeated on an adjacent non-landfill plot that received the same 60 cm of soil. Sspecies were evaluated for tolerance to landfill environment by comparing root systems 4 years after planting. Most tolerant were Pinus thunbergii and Picea abies, species that naturally have a shallower root system. Authors concluded that due to reduced O2 and elevated CO2 in landfill soils, naturally shallow-rooted species are more tolerant of landfill conditions.
