Abstract/Contents:"In 1978, a study was initiated to determine the variation in Kentucky Bluegrass varieties to absorb nutrients from the soil. The varieties included in this comparison were: Adelphi, Baron, Brunswick, Delft, Enmundi, Fylking, Glade, Kenblue, Merion, Nugget, Parade, Rugby, Sydsport, Touchdown, and Victa. All plots received 1 lb. N per 1000 sq. ft. in April and no other fertilizer during this growing season. Clippings were harvested at three-week internals between May and September, and analyzed for their N, P, and K content. Based upon growth data and mineral content, a rate of nutrient recovery from the soil will be calculated for each variety. This value will be correlated wit hnet photosynthetic rates and the rate of sugar transport to the roots. In the laboratory, the efficiency of nutrient uptake by roots of the various varieties will be measured and correlated with field performance. This study should indicate which Kentucky Bluegrass varieties, if any, age most efficient in recovering nutrients from low fertility soil."
