| Abstract/Contents: | Presents part three of a series on chlorpyrifos, "the most widely used insecticide in the [United States]," focusing on its ecological effects. States that "the organophosphate insecticide chlorpyrifos is toxic to a wide variety of beneficial arthropods including bees, ladybugs, and parasitic wasps." Details damage the insecticide can cause on fish, birds, and plants. Suggests that "synergism between three pesticides (including chlorpyrifos) and an anti-nerve gas drug may be the cause of the 'Gulf War syndrome,' a disease affecting combat veterans from the Persian Gulf war." Reports that "one common [inert material found in chlorpyrifos] is xylene, which can cause nausea, vomiting, hearing and memory loss, reduced fertility, and leukemia." |
