Abstract/Contents:"Major changes have occurred in turfgrass management in recent years. One of the most significant has been the selection or development of improved grasses - grasses specifically designed for turf usage. The need for still better grasses is clearly recognized and turfgrass researchers have placed a high priority on research designed to fulfill this need. Breeding, selection and cultivar evaluation occupy an ever-increasing amount of research time at this station. Many years are required to properly evaluate new grass varieties. New trials are established annually. They are generally maintained for 5 to 8 years before judgements are made and improved grasses receive an official recommendation. Several trials are currently in progress: a. Northeastern Regional Bluegrass-fescue Trial. This is one of many similar studies in progress throughout the 13 Northeastern states. Fifty-five selections or varieties (cultivars) of Kentucky bluegrass and 24 of fine fescue were seeded in September, 1968. Each grass is replicated 3 times at cutting heights of 1-1/2 and 3/4 inch. The bluegrasses receive 4 lbs. of N/1000 sq. ft. annually and the fescues, 3 lbs. b. For small scale evaluations were started between September 1968 and September of 1971. They include more-recently-received commercial and experimentaly grasses - bluegrasses, fescues, and ryegrasses. They are maintained at 11/2 inch cutting height and 3 to 4 lbs. N/1000 sq. ft., yearly. c. Twelve Kentucky bluegrass cultivars from domestic and European sources are being evaluated for turf usage at 3/4 inch cutting height under medium fertility (3-4 lbs.) N/1000/yr.) These plots were seeded in April, 1967."
