| Abstract/Contents: | "Rhynchosporium orthosporum was isolated from Lolium multiflorum from breeders' plots at Aberystwyth twice as aften as R. secalis. R. orthosporum from Dactylis glomerata, L. multiflorum or L. perenne would infect only the host genus from which it was isolated. R. secalis from L. multiflorum would produce symptoms not only on L. perenne, but on Hordeum sativum as well. Significantly, this was of race U.K.1, the most common race on H. sativum. Of 20 genotypes of L. multiflorum cv. RvP, 17 ranked similarly for level of resistance to both pathogen species. However, the remaining three genotypes were resistant to one, but markedly susceptible to the other. Progeny of selected resistant genotypes were far more resistant than the original cultivar. This suggests that there are reasonable prospects for resistance breeding." |
