Abstract/Contents:Presents two studies in which a flow column was developed that filters nitrate and phosphate from putting green leachate. Details filter materials and methods used during the studies, stating that "anionic exchange resins were mixed uniformly with ferrihydrite-coated sand. Each flow column was a 6-inch (15.2-centimeter) x 3-inch (7.6-centimeter) column with caps on each end to hold the contents and seal the column." Reports that "phosphate-phosphorus was captured with greater than 95% efficiency until more than 37 gallons (140 liters) of the anion solution had been continuously pumped through the filter." Concludes that "although the filter was not able to reduce phosphate-phosphorus in the leachate below the [United States Environmental Protection Agency] maximum concentration levels on any sampling date, phosphate-phosphorus data do show the filter was able to reduce the phosphate-phosphorus concentration in the leachate by more than 94% when compared with the unfiltered leachate levels."
