Abstract/Contents: | "Native bee populations have declined by more than 70% in the UK in the last 30 years, primarily due to loss of food resources and nesting sites (Ratnieks, 2009). Operation Pollinator has been pioneered and funded by Syngenta to re-establish the habitat and allow bees the chance to recover. This research was underpinned by the BUZZ project, which developed into Operation Bumblebee to determine optimal floristic enhancement, flower utilisation by pollen and nectar feeders, butterflies and ground and canopy dwelling arthropods (Anon, 2009). It has become so popular that Sainsburys, a major UK food retailer, has become involved, encouraging over 300 of its growers to attend specialist training in how to manage areas of their farm to encourage bumblebees and other pollinators. Many UK farmers have now dedicated bumblebee areas without the need to reduce intensive farm production. Following its success on arable farms, the effect of a similar programme on golf courses was investigated to determine the potential of establishing flowering species suitable to bees without affecting the playing quality of the golf course." |
