| Abstract/Contents: | "Characterisation of the playing properties of golf greens is important for both research studies and for the monitoring of greens in relation to agronomic advice. Assessments of playing quality that have been made include green speed by use of distance rolled after release down an inclined ramp, the firmness of a green usually based on the deceleration of a falling weight and ball impact studies in which the behaviour of a ball fired at specified velocity, angle and backspin is recorded (Baker 1994). There is, however, very little information on the evenness of golf greens, particularly in terms of its effects on ball roll. The evenness of the surface will affect both vertical movement during roll (bobble) and lateral deviation. The objective of this paper is to present a method for characterising surface evenness and to show examples of how management practices can affect recorded values." |
