Abstract/Contents:"Ball roll, or as it is often referred to as green speed, is an important component in characterizing putting green surfaces. Factors that impact ball roll including mowing height, fertilization, rolling, and other cultural practices have been documented (Sweeney et al., 2000). Little information however is available on the influence on the golf ball itself on ball roll. Most studies have focused on the effect of a golf ball upon impact with the club and its subsequent trajectory and flight and the subsequent impact of the ball on the green (Chou et al. 1994, Lemons et al., 1999, Hubbard et al., 1999) The United States Golf Association (USGA) Stimpmeter is often used to determine putting green ball roll (OBrien, 1981). In 2002, the Pelzmeter was reported as an alternative method for measuring ball roll (Pelz, 2002). In a recent study comparing the two measuring devices no difference in ball roll measurements were found (Richards, et al., 2009). The objective of the study was to determine the impact of golf ball construction, dimple pattern, and dimple number on ball roll using two different methods for determining ball roll."
