Abstract/Contents:"In warm regions, common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) or one of the many interspecific hybrid cultivars, crosses of common and African bermudagrass (Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt-Davy), are used for residential lawns, parks, athletic fields, and golf courses. In locations where bermudagrass enters into dormancy due to cool temperatures, one of the most important and damaging disease is spring dead spot, caused by Ophiosphaerella herpotricha (Fr.) J. Walker, O. korrae (J. Walker and A.M. Smith) R.A. Shoemaker and C.E. Babcock, or O. narmari (J. Walker and A.M. Smith) Wetzel, Hubert, and Tisserat (Endo et al., 1985; Smiley et al., 2005; Smith 1965; Wetzel et al., 1999). Disease symptoms appear as dead circular patches when healthy plants break dormancy in the spring and resume growth. The fungus infects and damages stolons, rhizomes, and roots and as a result it is difficult to study the progression of disease using traditional approaches. The objectives of these studies were to transform the O. herpotricha to express either green (GFP) or red (tdTomato) fluorescent protein and observe the host-pathogen interaction for different bermudagrass cultivars."
