Abstract/Contents:"Cold acclimation plays a decisive role in turfgrass winter survival. Carbohydrate accumulation during cold acclimation is one of the essential physiological responses to low temperature in autumn, and is of great importance for turfgrass freezing tolerance. Two stages of cold acclimation have been suggested (Tumanov, 1940; Sakai and Larcher, 1987). While some seasonal changes in carbohydrate accumulation have been documented for velvet bentgrass (VB, Agrostis canina L.) and creeping bentgrass (CB, Agrostis stolonifera L.) (Zanoni et al., 1969; Xu and Huang, 2003), less is known about carbohydrate changes in crowns during the first and second phases of cold acclimation in these species. Our interest in VB was initiated by putting green variety trials showing VB to have better winter survival and turf quality than other turfgrass species (Molteberg et al., 2008). Thus, the objectives of this study were to compare freezing tolerance as determined by LT50 (lethal temperature for 50% of the test populations) and to quantify carbohydrate changes during different stages of cold acclimation in VB (cv Greenwich) and CB (cv Penncross)."
