Abstract/Contents:"Reduction in greenhouse gases emissions (GGE) is one of the main goals of Local Climate Plans driven by local governments. These plans have applications in design and management of green amenities in public spaces and many city managers are asking how to use their green spaces to reduce GGE and increase carbon storage potential through the use of plants. By analyzing the range of operations required to achieve the aesthetic and functional goals of maintaining turfgrasses new approaches may play a role in the fight against global warming. Since 2008, the technical institute Plant & City and the French Turfgrass Society in partnership with the greens keepers and managers of sport and leisure areas, have collected data to evaluate carbon footprint of turf grass maintenance. The purpose is to evaluate the practices which contribute to GGE or to carbon sequestration in soil by turf grasses. Goals of the study were (i) to determine if significant differences existed between the maintenance programs of different turf grasses categories, and (ii) determine actions to reduce the carbon footprint."
