Abstract/Contents:"Surface drainage is vital in the construction of local authority and club sports pitches on clay loam topsoils in the United Kingdom (Jaaback, 2008). On relatively level pitches the development of ponds and water logged areas generally occur wherever slight depressions become apparent and it is common to find that the layout of these pitches in urban areas, because of the immediate surrounding levels, makes it impractical and unsightly to cut in a significant cross-fall gradient. This is not difficult however, where pitches are constructed by cut to fill in sloping landscapes as only the side slopes are affected. A cross-fall gradient of between 1:50 and 1:70 has been found to be the minimum requirement (Adams and Gibbs, 1994; McIntyre, 2004). In a single gradient design this would involve a fall of at least one metre over the width of the pitch. Furthermore, besides the cost of earthworks and drainage installation, the maintenance of sports pitches today becomes a real issue among local authorities and clubs where the annual budget expenditure is limiting."
