Abstract/Contents:"Late autumn N fertilization of turf is routinely recommended in the cool-season region of North America. North American Universities often recommended applying a single dose of N of 25 to 98 kg ha-1 in autumn which typically accounts for 33% to 50% of the annual N fertilizer budget (Lloyd, 2008). Late autumn N fertilization is encouraged because of the perceived ability of turfgrass to continue N uptake after the cessation of shoot growth. Nitrogen uptake during this time is commonly associated with improved color in the spring (Walker et al., 2007) and potentially enhanced root development and carbohydrate storage (Powell et al., 1967a, 1967b). Agronomic benefits associated with late autumn N fertility are widely accepted among turfgrass managers although research directly quantifying turfgrass N uptake in cool temperatures is limited. Our objective was to quantify N uptake and allocation between the roots and verdure of cool-season turfgrasses as temperatures declined. Our hypothesis was that late autumn N uptake would decrease commensurate with temperature."
