Abstract/Contents:"Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) often is slow to germinate and establishment, thus limiting seeding to periods ideal for establishment (Stier et al., 2008). Kentucky bluegrass establishment has been found to be affected by several factors. Kentucky bluegrass establishment is more sensitive to low soil phosphorus than other cool-season grasses (Hamel et al., 2007). Applying low amounts of N (24 kg ha -1) and P (12 kg ha-1) resulted in faster Kentucky bluegrass establishment over no fertilization or either along, but additional P did not improve establishment (Hathcock et al., 1984). Turfgrass stand development was enhanced by slow release nitrogen (IBDU, SCU, and UF) treatments when compared to fast-release nitrogen (urea and NH4NO3) sources, regardless of N-rate or placement for N applications up to 147 kg N ha-1 (Shearman, 1983). A seeding rate of 196 field-viable seeds dm2 was found to produce peak turf density of Kentucky bluegrass at 2 months after planting, while no benefit was derived in higher rates (Brede and Duich, 1984). However, there is little information on the impact of higher N rates (typically used by USA sod producers), applying P on soils adequate in P and high seeding rates on Kentucky bluegrass establishment. The objective of this study was to determine if the source and rate of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) application rate, or seeding rate affected the rate of establishment of Kentucky bluegrass on two soils (silt loam and muck)."
