Abstract/Contents:"In Germany, in most cases, Agrostis stolonifera, Agrostis capillaris and Festuca rubra are used on golf course putting greens in a mixture or in a pure stand. Various cultivars of these species have different advantages and disadvantages in tolerance to low mowing heights, turf grass quality such as leaf texture and density, and also thatch accumulation and liability to diseases. The use of pesticides gets more and more restricted under the new plant protection package of the European Parliament so it would be useful to know alternative maintenance programs and also other possible species of turf grasses. Agrostis canina is known as a fine-leaved turf grass with a very dense sward and tolerance to low clipping height for good putting surfaces. It fell out of favour of turf managers nearly 50 years ago when management programs began their heavy reliance on petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides. These higher maintenance inputs favoured the creeping bentgrasses (Torello, 2001)."
