Abstract/Contents: | States that "many things can be done that reduce our use of resources which in turn will reduce costs," and discusses the use of mobile mapping systems to reduce chemical input and irrigation amounts on golf courses. Explains that "we [Toro Company] developed a mobile sampling vehicle...that collects soil moisture, salinity, compaction, and plant reflectance on a spatially frequent pattern of up to 1000 samples per fairway." Details the development of the system, as well as methods for utilizing its findings. Summarizes the potentially negative effects of compaction and salinity, and overviews the benefits of in-ground sensors. Concludes that "as an industry, it would be to our advantage to be proactive and take steps that show we are continually improving our resource utilization." |
