Abstract/Contents:Reports on a study conducted by the FFR (Farmers' Forage Research) Cooperative to improve disease resistance and seed yield in varieties of tall fescue, orchardgrass, and timothy (Phleum pratense) through breeding. Details the materials and methods used in the study, stating that "the general breeding method used for developing the varieties in our program is a recurrent selection scheme" and that greenhouse disease screening programs were used to assess resistance and determine "other desirable characteristics." Briefly mentions the use of forage yield tests in various states across the country to additionally assess experimental synthetics and other FFR varieties. Reports projected goals of the study as: determining resistance to stem rust and purple leaf spot in orchardgrass, resistance to crown rust and stem rust in tall fescue, and high seed yield in both species.
