Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted in Arizona during 1965-66 to determine the effects of winter overseeding several types of seeds on bermudagrass. Details methods and materials used, noting that "strips of 4 different grasses for winter overseeding were planted across 4 replicates of 16 bermudagrass varieties...[The seed sources included] Poa trivialis at 6 lbs. [pounds] per 1,000 sq. ft. [square feet], Penlawn fescue at 6 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft., annual ryegrass at 15 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft., and a mixture of Highland bentgrass, Pennlawn fescue and Kentucky bluegrass at 10 lbs. of mixture per 1,000 sq. ft." Reports that "considerable thinning occurred on some varieties while stands were maintained or even somewhat thickened on others." Also states that "within each overseeding there were significant differences from mean values in bermudagrass variety effects for the annual ryegrass and the mixture but not for the Poa trivialis and Pennlawn fescue." Concludes that "reasons for the stand differentials remain obscure, but these preliminary results suggest that bermudagrass varieties can respond differently to overseeding." Provides a table detailing stand percentages for four different winter overseedings on bermudagrass.
