| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses ground pearls (Margarodes meridonalis Morr.), suggesting in the 1960s that "[they are] the major insect problem in Arizona even though...[their] destructiveness is confined to Tifgreen plantings in Maricopa County." Details the life cycle of the insect, stating that "shortly after hatching, [ground pearl] nymphs crawl a short distance, only inches, and with their mouth parts attach themselves to bermudagrass roots. Immediately after attachment, the nymph loses its legs and develops a pearl-like covering." Reports instances of ground pearls being discovered in turf throughout Arizona during the late 1960s. Presents several studies concerning ground pearl population, distribution, toxicity, and control, detailing the methods and materials used for each. Provides several tables emphasizing the results, which state that "in the field experiments 10 percent Di-Syston (disulfoton) granules gave statistically significant reductions in 2 of the 3 plots." |
