Abstract/Contents:"After an outline of the geographical conditions of the German Federal Republic and the related problems of safeguarding nature, soil and water, the construction of turf sports areas is described. The type of construction depends on the nature of the underlying soil and tries to reduce disturbance of the land, to keep down expenditure of bringing in construction materials, and to reduce the need for maintenance by using a site-adapter method of construction. When turf rootzones are prepared, there are problems with testing permeability in a representative way, both during installation and in the finished state, but method has been found for material-specific compaction of samples. Special efforts are currently being made to develop substitutes for peat from cell reactor composts, although questions remain to be solved on the increased salt concentration, the water-holding and the nitrogen breakdown. The sown species are almost entirely Lolium perenne (Lp) and Poa pratensis (Pp). With Lp it is necessary to improve the resistance against Corticium fuciforme and Gerlachia nivalis. There is special need to give attention in future to the whole matter of nitrogen fertilization, to link together better the requirements for sward renovation and maintenance, disease aspects, and soil and water pollution, particularly with areas used all the year. Various questions are posed, and comments made in the light of existing knowledge. In general, changing environmental conditions raise the problem for turf sports areas of combining fitness for purpose with greater conformity to natural conditions."
