Abstract/Contents:"Wear and soil compaction are primary stresses on recreational turfgrass sites. Progress towards alleviating these stresses will require a) a fundamental understanding of mechanisms that impart tolerance to each stress, b) development of grasses with improved tolerance to each stress through breeder screening by specific plant markers indicative of stress tolerance, and, c) creation of new and/or improved cultural programs for each stress. Understanding of how cultural program alterations influence each stress can best be achieved by determining how the change affects tolerance mechanisms rather than by overall plant responses such as percent cover or visual quality. This review discusses research directions and precautions for investigators involved in a basic science approach to wear and compaction stresses. The potential contributions of applied traffic research are also defined."
