Abstract/Contents:"Responses of turfgrasses to growth regulators have not been consistent nor always desirable. Through direct observation and extensive review of the literature the thesis proposed is that the erratic turfgrass responses to growth regulators are a result of the dynamic nature of grasses and not unpredictable behavior of chemistry. Thus a good undrstanding of growth, development, ontogeny, reproductive physiology, senescence and death is critical to predicting desirable responses of turfgrasses to growth regulators. The action of chemistry can be divided in two distinct types: 1) direct or indirect inhibition of cell division or cell differentiation, and 2) inhibition of cell elongation. These actions result in different, yet predictable responses in turfgrasses."
