Abstract/Contents:"A program is described which attempts to breed attractive plants for use in multi-species lawns and parks. The program uses species that are already widespread in such areas in New Zealand, but attempts by breeding to diminish their weed features and to enhance their attracative features. Several species are under study, but this paper reports on the genetic improvement possible in three species - a grass (Poa annua L.), a legume (Trifolium dubium Sibth), and a herb (Bellis perennis L.). In each case, the general aim has been to reduce the amount of vegetative bulk but to increase the production of attractive inflorescences. Selection has been made also for increased shoot density (both vegetative and flowering), reduced incidence of disease, and attractive dark colours. Progress has been obtained in most of the characters selected in Poa annua and Trifolium dubium and there is evidence also of suitable genetic variation in Bellis perennis."
