Abstract/Contents:"A breeding program to develop lower growing "dwarf-type" cultivars of tall fescues (Festuca arundinacea) is described. Comparisons of the original turf-type tall fescues and forage cultivars with dwarf cultivars were made in Oregon and California. Mature plant heights and vertical growth of stands at seven and eight months were the characteristics studied in seed yield trials, while turf quality was studied in turf trials. Dwarf-type varieties showed reduced mature plant height and reduced vertical growth rates. Compared to forage and original turf-types, dwarf cultivars have a finer leaf texture and a higher tiller density resulting in superior turf quality in arid regions under irrigation. Breeding for a shorter mature plant height by phenotypic recurrent selection has produced the cultivars Trailblazer, Eldorado, Monarch, Murietta and Silverado. These cultivars have a more prostrate growth and improved overall turf quality."
